The concept of archaea was proposed by Carl Woese and George Fox in 1977 because they are different from other prokaryotes in the phylogenetic tree of 16S rRNA.
Archaea are a very special kind of bacteria, which have certain characteristics of both prokaryotes and eukaryotes at the same time. They are the earliest organisms in the world with a small amount of genetic information. Most archaea live in various extreme ecological environments, they represent the limit of life and determine the scope of the biosphere. Archaea, bacteria and eukaryotes together constitute a three-domain system of biology. From the RNA evolution tree, archaea are divided into two categories, Crenarchaeota and Euryarchaeota. Representative archaea include thermophiles and alkaliphiles, etc. Because of the difficulty of cultivating archaea compared with bacteria, 16S rRNA gene sequencing is a preferred method to study the origin and evolutionary relationship of archaea.
